In Cloudflare’s network, at the node nearest to you — usually in your country or a neighbouring one. Most sites behind Cloudflare are served from there too, so the number reflects everyday browsing rather than one far-away server.

Why is the speed lower than my plan?

Wi‑Fi, an old router, other devices on the line, a busy VPN or the provider’s peering can all cut the number. Test over a cable if you can, pause other downloads, and compare with and without VPN.

Does a VPN slow the connection?

Almost always a little: encryption and the detour through the VPN server add latency and cap the speed at what that server can deliver. Run the test with the VPN on and off to see the price.

What does the test send, and where?

Only test traffic — random bytes downloaded from and uploaded to Cloudflare, which already sits in front of this site. We don’t store the results and don’t send them to Cloudflare’s results log.

What the numbers mean

Download: How fast data reaches you — pages, video, downloads. Measured in megabits per second: 8 Mbit/s is 1 MB per second.
Upload: How fast data leaves you — calls, uploads, cloud backups. On home lines it is usually lower than download.
Latency: Round-trip time of a small request while the line is idle. Under 20 ms is excellent; above 100 ms you feel it in calls and games.
Jitter: How much latency wobbles between requests. High jitter breaks voice and video even when the speed is fine.
Latency under download: Latency measured while a download or upload saturates the line. If it jumps far above the idle value, the router’s buffers are too large (bufferbloat): one download slows everything else.
